Distributed Control of Multi-Robot Teams:
نویسنده
چکیده
This research addresses the problem of achieving fault tolerant cooperation within smallto medium-sized teams of heterogeneous mobile robots. We describe a novel behavior-based, fully distributed architecture, called ALLIANCE, that utilizes adaptive action selection to achieve fault tolerant cooperative control. The robots in this architecture possess a variety of high-level functions that they can perform during a mission, and must at all times select an appropriate action based on the requirements of the mission, the activities of other robots, the current environmental conditions, and their own internal states. Since such cooperative teams often work in dynamic and unpredictable environments, the software architecture allows the team members to respond robustly and reliably to unexpected environmental changes and modifications in the robot team that may occur due to mechanical failure, the learning of new skills, or the addition or removal of robots from the team by human intervention. After presenting ALLIANCE, we describe our implementation of this architecture on a team of physical mobile robots performing a cooperative baton passing task. These experiments illustrate the ability of ALLIANCE to achieve adaptive, fault-tolerant cooperative control amidst dynamic changes during the task.

A Layered Architecture for Coordination of Mobile Robots
This paper presents an architecture that enables multiple robots to explicitly coordinate actions at multiple levels of abstraction. In particular, we are developing an extension to the traditional three-layered robot architecture that enables robots to interact directly at each layer – at the behavioral level, the robots create distributed control loops; at the executive level, they synchroniz...
متن کاملCoordinated Teams of Reactive Mobile Platforms
This paper presents techniques for exploiting redundancy in teams of mobile robots. In particular, we address tasks involving the kinematic coordination of several communicating robots. Teams are modeled as highly redundant spatial mechanisms for which multi-objective, concurrent controllers are constructed using a generalization of nullspace control. The goal is to develop a methodology in whi...
متن کاملTask description, decomposition, and allocation in a distributed autonomous multi-agent robot system
In this paper a new intelligent control architecture for autonomous multi-robot systems is presented. Furthermore, the paper deals with task description, task distribution, task allocation and coordination of the system components. The main advantage of the new control architecture is the distributed execution of tasks or subtasks by components of the multi-robot system. The components are able...
متن کاملDistributed versus centralistic action planning for multi-agent-teams in complex, dynamic domains
While distributed problem solving has many advantages the efficient coordination of multiple autonomous robots is still not always possible. There are several different ways of how to approach the coordination problem. Most of those require excessive communication in order to negotiate a valid global plan. Yet the global plan after the coordination might still be less effective than a plan gene...
متن کاملMarket-based Approaches for Coordination of Multi-robot Teams at Different Granularities of Interaction
-Multi-robot teams can improve safety and increase human productivity for operations in hazardous environments. To be effective, a control scheme is needed to decompose a task, assign subtasks to individual robots, and synchronize execution. We have developed a market model for this control scheme that realizes the best of both centralized and distributed approaches. In the market approach, rob...
